A multidisciplinary designer and overall curious person, Kirby took an interest in design from an early age. From rearranging the furniture in her bedroom countless times to constructing hundreds of Lego houses, she has always been interested in how the world we inhabit affects us. Taking notice of this world around her, she began filling a mental filing cabinet with ideas of what works, what doesn't, and what could.
With a passion for design collaboration, she aims to approach projects from multiple angles, drawing insights from many sources, and developing innovative solutions. Believing that the best way to deliver design solutions is to interact with the end user and truly understand their needs, Kirby is a big proponent of field research. She has experience conducting end user research and workflow analysis within the healthcare industry, focusing primarily on hospital caregiver environments.
Kirby believes strongly in sustainability. She first became interested in the concept of sustainability while studying at Syracuse University. Initially focusing on sustainable construction techniques, she has grown her knowledge of sustainability to include topics such as materials management, energy impacts, IPD and BIM, and sustainable business solutions. Kirby is a LEED AP ID+C and has an in-depth knowledge not only of the LEED rating systems, but also of the overarching goals behind the credits.
In 2009, she was honored with 1st Place in the ASID New York Upstate-Canada East Chapter Design Awards. Her winning submission was a co-conceptualized futuristic retail concept based on the weblog "Inhabitots.com". The design envisioned retail in the year 2030 and centered on the fusion of Internet commerce and social media with regional product and construction materials.
Kirby received a BFA in Interior Design from Syracuse University, where in addition to interior design, she studied sustainable construction, graphic design and interdisciplinary design.
